BusinessEurope Council of Presidents met, in an extraordinary meeting, in order to discuss the current situation, following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and to prepare a message of the business community in the context of the upcoming informal meeting of heads of state or government in Versailles.

In this letter, the European business community defends the EU’s sanctions and strongly condemns Russia’s actions. They also argue that the EU’s strength comes from its economic power, based on European values, hence the need to mitigate the severe consequences that are already being felt, reduce energy dependence, and strengthen defense capacity.

President António Saraiva defended the active role that the business community has been showing and its concern regarding the exacerbation of the constraints faced by companies. He stated that support measures should be extraordinary and temporary, aimed at companies while the problem persists, according to their needs, typology, and sector.
